Though in the American Heritage dictionary, the term Lolita means ‘a seductive adolescent girl’, the infamous fashion brand “Lolita” does not connote sex. The fashion line uses the name for their brand however they created a new meaning to it. The style itself represents difference on the real meaning of the term and clarifies no relation to the ground-breaking novel entitled Lolita of renowned Russian author Vladimir Nabokov. The novel signifies an obsession of an older man to an adult-child temptress. On the other hand, the brand name Lolita does not live up to this protocol.
Lolita dresses were not created to attract and drool men over or to give pedophiles the chance to attack and lure young-adults. Instead, their creations aim to give ladies the feeling of being secure, young, pretty and graceful. In addition, the brand name has its own purpose and objectives. It prefers ladies to be beautiful and cute rather than to be sexy. It fights the exposure of skin and body and presents modesty in fashion. Also, it allows ladies to know more their preferences and sexuality.
Logically, the term has been utilized because everyone refers to it as ‘young girls’ and it suits their target market who are mostly girls who wanted to adorn themselves like Victorian children and porcelain dolls.
The Lolita dresses had been influenced and popularized by visual kei (visual art) bands. It features rock music performers in elaborate and flamboyant costumes. The former leader and guitarist of Malice Mizer band named Mana had been attributed for popularizing the fashion especially Gothic Lolita.
In 1999, Mana founded his own fashion label Moi-meme-Moitie and named his designs as ‘Elegant Gothic Lolita’ and ‘Elegant Gothic Aristocrat’. In addition, his fashion line has successfully established itself and considered one of the most popular Lolita franchise. Moreover, other bands and personalities had been helpful on the success of the label. For instance, the band Razorbladekisses from United Kingdom had made an impact on Lolita clothes while Japanese franchise Pokemon had been influenced by the brand in terms of its actual characters.
On the other hand, the influence of Lolita in the fashion industry is also undeniable. It made an immediate impact on countries like China, Korea, Taiwan and even the United States. It had penetrated the industry like other fashion lines and became successful. The styles and designs affect the fashion sense of celebrities, musicians and ordinary people.
