This tutorial was created in the Amp'd Mobile forum by our very own, Wineaux on 10/16/2006. All I did was change the markup language to correctly reflect his hyperlinks for this new-fangeled wiki system. ~Matt314159

Needed software:

WM Recorder v11

WMA to MP3 Conversion Page

Amazing Media Browser Firefox Add-on

All of these programs are either free, or have limited demo modes which will still work perfectly for our purposes. If you decide you want the full functionality of this software, then by all means purchase it, but don't believe that you cannot do this without buying something. You can do this all for FREE if you want.

Let 'er RIP:

For this example we are going to nab a ringtone from MTV Mobile.

(I will assume at this point that you have downloaded the above software and are using the Firefox browser.)

  1. Click on the PREVIEW tab of your chosen ringtone. For this example I chose Beevis and Butthead "Cornholio" Realtone.
  2. A blank page opened in Firefox which automatically started your default media play and allowed you to listen to the ringtone preview. On some sites this will be a small window with audio player controls, or some other arrangement that will vary from ringtone site to ringtone site. It doesn't matter. What we are looking for is a little exclamation point with a number by it in the bottom right-hand corner of that window. That is the Amazing Media Browser. It is our friend.
  3. Click the little exclamation point. This launches the Amazing Media Browser. The Amazing Media Browser allows you to play the media file, share it with your friends, and a host of other things. We will use this in a moment.
  4. Launch WM Recorder 11. Choose the to just DEMO the program. Who cares if it can only RIP five clips before having to shut it down and restart it. If you want to not have to restart the program every five downloads, then buy it.
  5. Once WM Recorder is fully loaded, we go back to the Amazing Media Browser. Now click COPY LINK. WM Recorder will start downloading your ringtone. In a couple of seconds it will be done. Now right-click the downloaded WMA music file and choose Preview Recorded File. Your new RIPPED ringtone will play. Congratulations, we are almost done.
  6. Load up the WMA to MP3 program you downloaded earlier. WM Recorder saves downloaded music files in the C:\Program Files\WMR11\Recordings directory. This is where you will find your future ringtone. Follow the instructions of your chosen conversion program and convert it to a MP3 file.
  7. We're almost done. Plug your USB cable into your PC and then into your phone. Fire up Windows Media Player. Now transfer your newly created MP3 file to your phone. It will save it to your Transflash card.

We are done. All we need to do is add our MP3 file as a ringtone. For this we are going to use Sean K's excellent tutorial, as there is no need to reinvent this wheel...

  1. Record a 25 second 64kbs mono mp3 file on computer.
  2. Mounted the memory card on my computer.
  3. Copied sound file to motorola>shared>audio on the memory card.
  4. Inserted memory card into phone.
  5. Put phone into airplane mode.
  6. Create new PIX message addressed to 55555.
  7. Select Insert Sound File.
  8. Switch Storage Device to TRANS-T-Flash
  9. Scroll to recorded sound and select.
  10. Send message.
  11. Because you are in airplane mode message won't get sent and will be put in your outbox.
  12. Go to your outbox and select that message.
  13. Read it and select "save items".
  14. Select "file" and then "store".
  15. Then select "Phone" to store it to the phone.
  16. Then select "Apply as ring tone"
  17. Your MP3 file is now available as a ring tone.

Congratulations! You have now RIPPED a ringtone! You can use this same procedure to RIP ringtones from almost any site on the web. One really neat place to get ringtones is on websites which sell CD's. Each CD almost always has short samples of each track. How short? Try 30 seconds or less...

I hope this tutorial helps those of you out there wanting more ringtones and more variety of ringtones for your Amp'd phones. Enjoy. Once you've done this a few times you will realize how truly simple all this is, and that you can have new ringtones in just minutes, and all for the low low price of FREE!
