Items needed

• A Straight Talk AT&T SIM card from the Straight Talk store
• Any GSM (see below) iPhone (2G, 3G, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5)
  • Both jailbroken and non-jailbroken instructions are included in this article; however, jailbreaking the iPhone makes the process much easier
  • Either an AT&T (GSM) iPhone (locked or unlocked, any model), or an iPhone that is both unlocked (factory unlocked or otherwise) and a GSM model (needs a SIM card)

SIM Cards and Activation

Can be ordered from the Straight Talk store You can also order one by going to Walmart website and doing a search for "Straight Talk AT&T SIM"). .

Important: be sure what you are ordering is an appropriate size SIM card, and that it is "AT&T compatible" (not T-Mobile compatible)!

• For the iPhone 5 ..... a SIM (mini or micro) card and cut down to nano SIM size using these detailed instructions. or buy something like this

• For the iPhone 4 and 4S ..... a micro SIM card

• For the iPhone 3G and 3GS ..... a mini SIM card

Note: Old instructions still exist that involve buying a Nokia E71 and using its SIM card / cutting it to micro or nano SIM card size; this method is obsolete and no longer needs to be used.

Activating the Straight Talk SIM on the iPhone is no different than activating any other SIM card from another carrier and can also be done online here

Notes about Jailbreaking

Jailbreaking is now available for all iDevices (as of February, 2013) for all iOS versions through 6.1.2. Several excellent guides containing pictures, text and video can be found here:

Cellular Data for non-Jailbroken devices

Here is a way to get cellular data (NOT MMS) working on non-jailbroken iPhones (that is, after your iPhone has been activated with Straight Talk):

1. While on Wi-Fi, open Safari and type in http://iapnupdateatt.straighttalk.com.
2. Tap Install.
3. Tap Install Now.
4. Enter your pass code if prompted.
5. Tap Done.
6. At this point you can exit your browser, turn off Wi-Fi, and re-boot your phone.
7. With Wi-Fi off, access Safari to ensure your data connection is working.

Alternatively using unlockit.co.nz

1. Using mobile Safari (no other mobile browser will work), go to http://unlockit.co.nz while connected to a WiFi network
2. Tap "Create APN"
3. Select "United States" as the country and "Straight Talk" as the carrier from their respective drop-down menus (See the discussion page for alternative APNS if you have issues with speedtest.net)
4. Tap "Create APN"
5. Install the profile when prompted

Cellular Data & MMS for Jailbroken Devices

Either of these solutions will enable MMS and cellular data on your iPhone.

TetherMe ($5) from BigBoss:

1. On your jailbroken iPhone, launch Cydia
2. Search for TetherMe, then purchase it, and install it
3. After TetherMe is installed, exit Cydia and go to your home screen
4. Open Settings > TetherMe > Cellular Data Network
5. Enter the APN settings below in the next section.

EditAPN (free) from LEI Mobile:

1. In Cydia, add the repo http://beta.leimobile.com/repo/.
2. Click the source and scroll until you see "EditAPN."
3. Install this application, then exit Cydia.
4. Go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network
5. Enter the APN settings below in the next section.

Notes:

• The unlockit.co.nz and the StraightTalk profile conflicts with the TetherMe app from Cydia.
  
• The easiest way to uninstall this profile from iOS is to go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

After reaching the configuration page for either tweak, fill in the fields as follows:

The cellular data on here works for the iphone, but the MMS settings do not work on all iphones, The above information is available (and modified for iPhone use) from the Straight Talk support page.

Cellular Data & MMS for non-Jailbroken Devices

Works with the iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S, and 5 through iOS 6.1.3. The iPhone 4 needs to be unlocked (factory or otherwise) for this method to work.

Items needed

• An iPhone (as listed above)
• A non-AT&T compatible SIM card (eg: T-mobile) and it does not even need to be currently activated
• A Straight Talk SIM card, as specified in this section
• A location with good cellular signal strength
• A SIM card tray removal tool (or a small paper clip)

Process

1. Remove any old APN profiles, which can conflict with any manual settings
   • The easiest way to uninstall these profiles from iOS is to go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
2. Turn off Wifi
3. Go to Settings > General > Cellular on the iPhone; ensure the Cellular Data switch is set to "ON" ("|" for some iPhones)
4. Open the SIM tray and swap in the non-AT&T compatible SIM card
5. Once "Cellular Data Network" option appears above "Use Cellular Data for:", tap on the "Cellular Data Network" menu
   • Note: A multi-task switch was once required to complete this step; this is now obsolete for iOS6 and above
6. Quickly switch the non-AT&T compatible SIM card with the Straight Talk SIM card
   • It is possible for the Cellular Data Network menu to close in this step; this will not affect the process
7. Wait approximately 1 minute for default settings to load from the SIM card to the iPhone
   • Look for the signal strength bars in the upper left hand corner of the iPhone to ensure this process is working
8. By default, the Straight Talk SIM will load "phone" into many of the APN setting's empty fields. These are incorrect; proceed to correct them using the manual settings above
9. Exit the cellular data menu by tapping the "Cellular" button in the upper left corner of the screen; do NOT click "Reset Settings"
   • The "Cellular Data Network" menu option will have vanished from General > Cellular; this is normal
10. Turn on airplane mode, then switch it off again after five seconds

All features (call, text, MMS, data, etc.) should now work. If they do not, double check on another GSM phone to ensure that the card is, in fact, activated. If the SIM card is removed, the above steps should be saved; if the SIM card is replaced with another, or if a software update occurs, the above steps will need to be completed again.

Visual Voicemail

Visual voicemail is not supported through Straight Talk. Standard auditory voicemail still works, however. There are several replacement services that can be used to add visual voicemail functionality to a Straight Talk iPhone:

YouMail

Full visual voicemail functionality (plus some extra features) is available through the free YouMail app from the iTunes AppStore.
After a YouMail account is setup, the iPhone's built-in voicemail functionality can be fully replaced (iOS4 only) with YouMail by using the Cydia tweak "YouMail".
The YouMail setup process is fully reversible so you can try it.

Google Voice

Full visual voicemail functionality (with text transcription and notifications) is also available through a free Google Voice account. Notifications and voicemail can be delivered by the Google Voice App or via text message, based on your settings.

Just sign up for Google Voice and add your Straight Talk number using the Google Voice Lite service and follow the prompts (being sure to choose the free "Lite" service rather than the phone number porting).
If you have an existing Google Voice number, go to Settings, select the Phone Tab, and then "Add another phone" at the bottom. Fill in the requested information, continue, and then click the "Activate Google voicemail on this phone" link at the bottom.
If you added your Straight Talk number to an existing Google Voice number, there's one more step: In order to get the "Voicemail" button in the "Phone" app to call your Google Voice voicemail rather than Straight Talk voicemail, you need to dial "*5005*86*XXXXXXXXX#" where XX..X is your Google Voice number. The screen will flash, and then your voicemail will be reset. (This procedure isn't necessary for Google Voice Lite.). If you are on a AT&T Sim card, also try this code for google voice: **004*1XXXYYYZZZZ#.

Jailbroken Method

The "HOME" text in the upper left corner (where the carrier name normally is) can be changed by using "Fake operator" (available for free in Cydia) [Here is a video]
or downloading "MakeItMine" from Cydia (This tweak is also bundled with "SBSettings").

Carrier logos can be used instead of text by using the tweak "Zeppelin" through Cydia which comes bundled with several logos. [Here is a video]
More logos can be downloaded through Cydia as extensions; for example, the Straight Talk logo can be found by searching for "StraightTalk Carrier Zeppelin". [More information]

Non-Jailbroken Method

The app CarrierEditor for Macintosh computers can be downloaded to change the text where the carrier name normally is.

Note: This method does not currently work with Straight Talk (confirmed with CarrierEditor creator). "HOME" comes back seconds after a reboot.

"Unlimited" Data

Even though Straight Talk advertises their plan as being "unlimited", numerous people have had their data discontinued until the next billing cycle. To avoid this, it is generally considered "safe" to use up to 2GB a month and 100MB a day.
My Data Usage Pro (among others) from the Appstore can be used to help keep track of data usage.
