File Access
Connecting via USB
For USB access, you will first need a cable that is compatible with this phone, such as those available on eBay. Before connecting the cable to your computer, install the CDMA Driver from Samsung and make sure to reboot your computer before plugging the phone in. If you are still having troubles, try rebooting the phone as well. At this point, you should be able to access the phone's file system using an application such as BitPim.
Many of the files and folders located in the /brew folder, where pictures and ring tones are stored, have been locked from direct editing by either Alltel or Samsung. Alltel has claimed the existence of firmware which would unlock these folders, but this has yet to be verified. Fortunately, there are ways around this lock.
Connecting via Bluetooth
You can find a bluetooth Dongle here
(Using BlueSoleil Bluetooth)
Samsung SCH-U420 only supports Serial Port Connections and Dial-Up Connections without special software. In order to access the phone's file system you, will need to download an application such as BitPim.
- First install the software associated with the cd that came with your dongle, in my case IVT Corporation BlueSoleil will be installed.
After installing it should ask you to restart your computer, and when you boot back up it should automatically have BlueSoleil started for you and waiting for you to connect your bluetooth device. Go ahead and plug the dongle into your usb port. BlueSoleil should recognize the device. Just give it some time it should configure itself so just sit back and relax for about 1 minute.
- A Welcome to Bluetooth window should pop-up with your devices address, device name and device type. Not much matters here so just choose them accordingly and press OK. The orange ball in the center represents your dongle, hover over it and it will display the data you just set.
- Pick up your phone, navigate to Menu->Settings->Phone Settings->PC Connection(or the quick way: Menu->8->5->8), then select Bluetooth and hit okay.
- Navigate to Menu->Tools->Bluetooth->Add New Device (or Menu->7->2->1), and then click ok at the next display screen to start searching for your bluetooth device. You should see your device's name show up on the screen. Click OK to pair your phone with the dongle and enter any number code you want and press OK. There should now be a pop-up box displaying on your computers screen. Enter that same code into the box and press OK. Your phone should be visible in the BlueSoleil window and is probably named to SCH-U420. (You are done configuring your phone, you can set it aside for now)
- Right-click on your phone in BlueSoleil and select Refresh Services. This should change two of the icons along the top to having a yellow border around them.
- Go to Tools->Configurations->Quick Connect... A list of COM ports should be visible. Select one, I am choosing COM6(SPP) and press Assign, then OK on the next pop-up, and then OK on the Quick Connect dialog.
- Now Press the Bluetooth Serial Port Service icon (the one on the right of the two). You should get a notification pop-up in the bottom right saying you COM port is connected to the remote device.
- Start Bitpim. If it starts with a Phone Detection Failed message then click Yes. If it did not come up with this screen go to Edit->Settings. Change Phone Type to Other CDMA phone. For Com Port you can click the browse and select the port you assigned your phone to. Bluetooth Serial Port(COM6) in my case. Press OK, and OK again on the Settings dialog.
- Go to View->View Filesystem, a check next to it means it is enabled.
- In the left window select Filesystem and middle window should have a folder with a plus next to it, click it and now you are ready to transfer files.
Once Connected
Uploading Wallpaper
Wallpaper can be added to the phone by uploading a JPEG or GIF to the /brew/shared/lk/mp folder. After rebooting the phone, the new wallpaper will appear in My Images in the Multimedia menu on the phone.
The ideal dimensions for wallpaper are: 176px x 182px (width x height). Larger and smaller sized images will be resized to fit, but with a white border around them.
Uploading Ringtones
Ringtones can be added to the phone by uploading them to the /brew/shared/mr folder. After rebooting the phone, the new ringtones will appear in My Ringtones in the Multimedia menu on the phone.
Although many formats of audio should work, one ideal format is a Mono, 32 Kbps, 22,050 Hz MP3.
Sounds can also be uploaded to the /brew/shared/ms folder, and will appear in My Sounds in the Multimedia menu on the phone. The differences between ringtones and sounds is minimal, noticeably, sounds can be sent to the online album or via SMS whereas ringtones cannot.
Retrieving Camera Pictures
Unfortunately, the /brew/shared/mp folder where camera pictures are stored is locked from downloading. However, when a picture is sent to either the Online Album or via SMS, it is copied to the /mm/mms folder on the phone.
So, in order to fully circumvent this limitation, first right-click on any of the phone's folders in BitPim and select Offline Phone. This will temporarily disconnect your phone from the network and prevent you from being charged for sending a photo.
Next, using the phone's picture gallery, find the photo to transfer and select Options, then Online Album. You should receive an error on the phone, but the photo can now be found and downloaded by navigating to the /mm/mms folder in BitPim.
Repeat as needed, and then reboot your phone so that it can reconnect to the network.
