Nextel is a wireless telecommunications services provider, based in Reston, Virginia. It was founded in 1987 and merged with Sprint in 2005. The company primarily utilizes iDEN technology from Motorola for its network, and differentiates its services with its subsecond DirectConnect push-to-talk service made possible by iDEN. Nextel currently has approximately 15.1 million subscribers, including 1.6 million lines of service which utilize PowerSource phones which rely on CDMA for voice, EV-DO for data, and iDEN for DirectConnect.

The current head of Nextel is Danny Bowman, president of the iDEN Business Unit at Sprint. The chief executive officer of Sprint is Dan Hesse, and Sprint's chairman is Jim Hance.
