Cingular APNs
General Purpose
Both general purpose APNs are usable on GPRS, EDGE, and UMTS. There is no intentional difference in speed between them, although some users report that at times one is slower than the other.
isp.cingular
isp.cingular provides a public IP address suitable for use with VPNs. It does not allow mobile terminated data. If you have a plan with access to isp.cingular, you can use Cingular's image compressing transparent proxy by using the data access login instead of the standard login.
wap.cingular
wap.cingular provides a private IP address with access to Cingular's WAP proxy. It allows access to Cingular's WAP deck at http://device.home and Cingular Video, in addition to Internet access with network address translation. It is not suitable for use with most VPNs.
Special Purpose
These APNs are only available by special request and may have extra charges associated. With these APNs you must provide your own security, as Cingular provides no firewall with them as they do for isp.cingular and wap.cingular.
internet
The internet APN is similar to isp.cingular, but allows for mobile terminated data. This means that any host on the Internet can connect to your device, causing you to incur data charges. This APN is primarily designed for use with push applications. It assigns IP addresses like isp.cingular, in that your IP address will not change as long as your session is active, but may change between data sessions. It allows for dynamic DNS to allow lookups of your IP address given your mobile number. The DNS name is of the format 1mobile number.internet.mycingular.com
When using this APN, leave the username and password fields blank.
To have it added to your account, contact the Enterprise Help Desk. You may also have success by quoting the SOC code to another representative. The SOC code which enables this APN is g895.
internettrial
The internettrial APN is for machine-to-machine applications. It is for trial/evaluation purposes only and has a 5 device per account limit. It uses static public IP addresses. There is a significant fee associated with the provisioning of static IP addresses on Cingular's network.
wwan
The wwan APN is the production version of internettrial. Up to 30 devices per account are allowed to use this APN. It is not available for use with laptops.
